Description

The Methodist Church, dated 1869 on the foundation stone, was designed by A. Lender of Barnstable. It is built from Ham stone ashlar and features a Welsh slated roof with ornamental clay ridges, representing a Non-Conformist version of 13th-century Gothic architecture. The main south facade has a wide gable with two gabled porches, each featuring pointed cusped arches leading to recessed doorways, supported by short freestanding jamb shafts. Between the porches is a five-lancet arcade, three of which are glazed, and above it is a five-light lancet window under a common pointed hood, flanked by two buttresses, one of which has a turretted top that once held a spirelet. The gable has a triple-lancet recess beneath the coping and is topped with a stone cross finial.

The west facade consists of six bays, with the first bay containing a plain pointed segmental arched doorway accessed by three steps. Bays two to five are separated by offset buttresses and feature gables with pairs of cusped lancets at two levels, the smaller ones located at ground floor level. The sixth bay has a semi-circular projecting wing on an octagonal base, which is one storey high and includes five small unhooded lancet windows beneath a string course and parapet that conceals a conical slated roof.

Inside, the church has a two-level arrangement, with the main chapel located on the first floor, supported by ornamental cast iron columns. A gallery is accessible via spiral stairs. The church suffered significant damage during World War II but has since been restored.
