Description
A pair of houses at 8 and 10 Church Street, Padstow, likely dating from the early 18th century. The front of the building is covered in slate over a timber frame with brick infill, and has a slate roof with gable ends; the roof of No. 10 has been cement washed. There is a brick end stack on the right and a rear lateral stack near the centre.
The original layout is uncertain, but may have been a three-room and passage plan, with the right-hand room heated by an end stack, the central room by a rear lateral stack, and the left-hand room possibly by a separate end stack. The houses may have been divided into two in the 19th century, or possibly were always two separate dwellings. A one-room kitchen wing was added to the rear of the right-hand room of No. 8 around the mid-19th century.
The exterior has a regular 1:2 window arrangement. No. 10 has a 16-pane sash window on each of the ground and first floors, and a 20th-century door to the right. It also features a 19th-century hipped dormer in the attic with a 2-light horizontally sliding sash window. No. 8 has two 19th-century, hornless, 16-pane sash windows on each of the ground and first floors, a 20th-century door near the centre, and a hipped dormer with a 2-light casement window in the attic.
Inside No. 8, there are 19th-century ceiling beams, 18th-century two-panel doors on the first floor, and a roof structure with principals featuring morticed apices; the collars have been renewed and nailed onto the face of the principals. The interior of No. 10 was not inspected.
