Description
25 and 27 Eastgate are two houses dating from the early 18th century, with 18th and mid-19th century alterations, and extensive additions at the rear of No. 25. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble and brick, featuring slate and plain tile roofs, along with three gable and two ridge stacks. They have stone plinths, a single coped gable, and a coped parapet. The houses rise two storeys plus attics and present a facade with eleven unequal bays. Most windows are glazing bar sashes.
No. 25, located on the left, features a mid-19th century stone doorcase with a cornice and barred sidelights. It has two sashes to the left and three sashes to the right. No. 27 has a fielded six-panel door with two glazed panels and a wooden surround, flanked by two sashes on the left and a single sash on the right, with a triple sash beyond. Above, there are ten sashes, with three on the right that have keystones. No. 25 also has three segment-headed dormers with sliding sashes.
Inside, No. 25 contains a resited mid-19th century Imperial staircase with twist balusters, situated in a full-height hall that features linenfold panelling and a scissor-braced roof. No. 27 has an 18th-century winder stair with stick balusters, a restored principal rafter roof with collars, and six 18th-century fielded two-panel doors.
