Description
This is an 18th-century house with alterations from the early 19th century and a rear addition. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and has plain tile, pantile, and hipped slate roofs, topped with various brick stacks.
The front elevation has a rendered plinth, chamfered quoins, a moulded eaves cornice, coped parapets, and gables. The main part is two storeys plus attics, with a three-window range and a double range plan. A central Doric portico shelters a six-panel door, the upper four panels glazed. Flanking the door are single Venetian windows with glazing bars. Above these, a central round-headed sash with glazing bars is flanked by single Venetian windows, all with glazing bars and keystones. Three segment-headed dormers are located above the top floor.
The garden front is asymmetrical and built of grey brick, with a wooden eaves cornice supported by brackets. To the left are two full-height 15-pane sashes, and to the right, a French window with sidelights. Above, to the left, are two similar 15-pane sashes with balconies and wrought-iron railings. To the right is a smaller 16-pane sash with a blank panel above it. All these openings feature brick flat arches. Beyond these are ramped coped walls with round arched doorways, leading to two-storey red brick side wings.
The interior features a central hallway with a spinal corridor, incorporating three moulded elliptical arches with keystones. On the ground floor, to the right is a dining room with a moulded cornice and a mid-19th century marble fireplace. The kitchen was refitted in the late 20th century. Both rooms have fielded six-panel doors with moulded surrounds. The cellar contains a brick elliptical vault, stone wine bins, and winder stairs. The drawing room and adjoining sitting room, located at the rear, also have fielded six-panel doors, moulded cornices, and ceiling bosses. The drawing room has two large sashes with shutters and a Classical-style wooden fireplace, while the sitting room includes a 19th-century painted slate fireplace.
A wooden dogleg staircase rises over four flights, featuring an ornamented string, turned newel posts, two vase and stem balusters per tread, and a hardwood handrail, complemented by a panelled dado. The first-floor landing has fielded six-panel doors in moulded surrounds and a coved oval skylight beneath a glazed cupola. A ballroom is located at the rear, featuring a moulded cornice, an oval ceiling panel in Adamesque style, two large windows with shutters, and a mid-19th century marble fireplace. Bedrooms have fielded six-panel doors, and the attics have 18th-century plank and panelled doors. The roof structure consists of a clasp purlin system with collars, largely renewed in the mid-20th century.
