Description
Polyphant House and its front railings are a building with possible origins in the 17th century, significantly altered in the late 18th century and potentially with a third storey added at that time. The front and rear elevations were remodelled during this period. The exterior is stuccoed and rendered, with a slate roof featuring gable ends and rendered end stacks. Originally planned with a two-room layout and a through passage, the internal partitions have since been removed. The Cross Street elevation presents a symmetrical three-window front across three storeys, with a rusticated ground floor and rusticated quoins on the upper floors. A fine late 18th century doorcase features fluted pilasters and a carved entablature. The ground floor has two 12-pane sashes to the right and left, while the first floor has two sashes flanking a central blind window. Three 3-over-6 pane sashes are located on the second floor. The rear garden elevation is symmetrical and also appears to have been remodelled in the early 19th century, featuring a rusticated ground floor and quoins. An early 19th century porch and complete sashes are present on this side. Internally, the original partitions have been removed, and a staircase against the rear wall of the left-hand room, likely dating to the mid to late 19th century, may have been reset. The upper floors remain uninspected. A circa late 18th century iron railing runs along the front of the Cross Street elevation.
