Description

Market Cottage is a town house with a later shop, likely dating from the 17th century. The front facing Middle Market Street features render on studwork, while part of the left-hand return is also rendered; the rest is made of painted rubble. It has a steep scantle slate roof with large eaves and verge slates, and three original crested clay ridge tiles. At the rear gable, there is a truncated rendered rubble stack.

The building has a double-depth plan with the gable end facing the street. It stands three storeys tall, with the second floor partly in the roof space at the rear and two storeys with an attic at the front. The first floor is blind, and there is a small 20th-century window in the centre of the gable. The ground floor features a central doorway with a 20th-century door and a three-light shop window to its left, making it a corner shop, along with a similar window on the left-hand return.

On the return, there is a mid to late 19th-century four-pane hornless sash window, and on the rubble part to the left, a similar sash window breaks the eaves as a raking dormer. Each floor below has a 20th-century window, with the ground floor opening spanned by a timber lintel. The rear, which was probably originally blind, has a late 19th-century 12-pane two-light casement window on the first floor to the right, situated above a rendered area surrounding a 20th-century window. The interior has not been inspected.
