Description
This is a milestone located on the B3254 at the turning for Trecrogo, dating from the mid or later 18th century. It is made of local granite and features a monumental design with a rounded head. The letter and number are carved into the stone's face and painted black, reading "L 3."
The milestone was erected by the Launceston Turnpike Trust in the latter half of the 18th century to mark the road from Launceston Castle to Trekelland Bridge. Although this road was significant as part of the main route between Launceston and Liskeard, it was never turnpiked beyond the notable Trekelland Bridge.
Milestones like this one are important as they are among the few physical remnants of both national and local historic road use. They reflect the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to meet the transport needs of the increasingly active commercial and industrial landscape of 18th century Cornwall. This milestone is one of several carved stone milestones marking the turnpike between Launceston and Trekelland Bridge. It remains intact and in its original location, and it has group value with the other milestones along this route.
