Description
Trelaske Mill is an 18th-century water-powered corn mill located in Lewannick. It is constructed of stone rubble with dressed stone voussoirs, and has a steeply pitched slate roof with hipped ends. The building's plan is rectangular, incorporating an overshot waterwheel at the rear left and a small stable on the right-hand side. The mill occupies two-thirds of the building.
The front elevation is symmetrical and features dressed stone voussoirs around the openings. The ground floor includes a central entrance with a 19th-century stable door, and a 16-light sash window to the left. A stable entrance is on the right. The first floor has a wide central loft door flanked by two 16-light sash windows. The ground rises to the left, where a loading bay is situated within the left gable wall, covered by a lean-to timber and corrugated iron structure. A 4.3-metre hybrid overshot waterwheel, manufactured by Jabez Buckingham of Northill, is located at the rear left; the wooden buckets have since perished.
The ground floor is partitioned, with a small stable area to the right. The larger area to the left contains surviving machinery that was in operation until 1952. This includes two pairs of millstones – one for animal feed and one for flour milling – a lighter staff for tentering, and the remains of a sack hoist. Remains of former millstones are set into the floor. The mill is a good example of an 18th-century water mill, retaining its original machinery and displaying a well-handled symmetrical facade. It has group value with the adjacent Mill Cottage.
