Description

Botathan Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the late 16th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries, and alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features asbestos tiles on the front. The roof is made of slurried scantle slate, with a gabled end on the right and a hipped end on the left, topped with clay ridge tiles, some of which are early crested ridge tiles. At the back, there are two larger rendered lateral stacks that rise through an outshut, with the hall stack having set offs. The building has a long plan with four rooms and a through passage, along with a single-storey outshut at the rear.

The west front is asymmetrical with four windows, featuring 20th-century two-light plastic casements. The central doorway has a chamfered granite frame with a four-centred arch and decorative leaf and boss carvings in the spandrels; there is a 20th-century door to the left. At the rear, the main roof extends over the single-storey outshut, which has 20th-century plastic casements and a 20th-century stone porch at the center. A 20th-century conservatory is located on the south gable end.

Inside, the passage's rear doorway, now part of the outshut, features a chamfered granite fireplace with pyramid stops and a basket arch. The former kitchen, located to the right of center, has rough timber framing around a granite rubble fireplace with a cloan oven. Both rooms have unchamfered cross-beams. The through passage has been widened to serve as a stair hall. Most of the internal joinery appears to be from the 20th century, including the stairs. The first floor was not inspected, but the roof over the stairs features straight principal rafters. Notably, a reused lintel over the gateway in front of the house is dated 1574, suggesting that this is likely when the house was originally built.
