Description

This is an early to mid 19th-century milestone made of local granite, located on the A30 slip road to Lewannick. It has a monumental shape with a shallow pointed head. The lettering and numbering are carved into the stone and painted black, indicating distances to Launceston (5 miles) and Bodmin (17 miles).

The milestone was erected by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust during the early to mid 19th century. The original Turnpike route connected Five Lanes, running north on Newhay, via Polyphant to Holloway Cross (now Holyway Cross), with milestones marking distances of 14, 15, 16, and 17 miles from Bodmin.

Milestones like this one are important as they are among the few physical remnants of historic road use, reflecting the standardization of roads and the establishment of turnpikes to support the growing commercial and industrial activities in 18th-century Cornwall. This milestone is one of several carved stone milestones that mark the turnpike route between Launceston and Bodmin. It remains intact and in its original location, contributing to its group value with other milestones along this route.
