Description
Woodland Cottage is a house with probable origins in the 17th century, which was partly remodeled around the 1830s. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof with gable ends and stone rubble end stacks. The original plan of the house is uncertain, but it consists of a two-room layout with a cross passage. The larger hall kitchen is on the left, heated by an end stack, while the probable parlour is on the right. There is a small projection at the rear of the left room that may have served as a dairy or stair projection. The front wall of the house appears to have been rebuilt in the 1830s.
The exterior is two storeys high and features an almost symmetrical three-window front, showcasing complete 19th-century sashes with original crown glass. The ground floor openings have dressed stone arches, with a 19th-century six-panel door and a flat hood to the right, alongside a 16-pane sash window. To the left, there is another 16-pane sash window in a granite surround with a two-light mullion window above it. The first floor has three 16-pane sashes, and the left side features a two-light mullion window. Additionally, the small projection at the rear left has an unglazed two-light window with unusual cusped heads made from a single piece of Polyphant stone.
Inside, there is a chamfered granite lintel above the fireplace in the left room, while the floor joists and stair have been replaced. The fireplace in the chamber above the left room also has a chamfered granite lintel, but the run-out stops do not match the narrower, finely chamfered ashlar Polyphant jambs. There are blocked doorways on both the ground and first floors that would have connected Woodland Cottage with the house at the rear, although the exact arrangement is uncertain. The house at the rear has been significantly altered in the 20th century and is not included in the listing.
