Description

This is a rectangular milestone with a rounded top, dating from around 1833. It is painted white with a black base, and features large, clearly incised black sans serif lettering reading 'L/13'.

The milestone has a historical connection to the Launceston Turnpike Trust, established by an Act of Parliament in 1760 to improve roads leading to Launceston. The route included travel from Okehampton in Devon, around the northern edge of Bodmin Moor to Camelford, then onwards west. This specific milestone stood on this route between Launceston and Camelford.

Following a change in road management and a shift in the starting point for measuring distances from St Thomas' Bridge to the centre of Broad Street market in Launceston in 1843, the milestone was relocated.

The milestone is designated at Grade II for its intact condition and carved inscription, its significance within a group of similar milestones along the turnpike route, and as an example of an early 19th-century milestone that demonstrates the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes to meet the transport needs of an increasingly industrial 19th-century Cornwall.
