Description

The Carriage House, now functioning as a bistro, dates from the early 19th century, incorporating a wall from an earlier building likely from the 17th century. It features serpentine rubble construction, with some dressed granite, and brick piers and arches at the front. The roof is hipped on the right side and is covered with dry Delabole slate. The building has a rectangular plan, with the rear wall approximately 80 centimetres thick, showcasing blocked mullioned windows and a doorway from the 16th or 17th century, along with remnants of another doorway at the rear left corner.

The structure is five bays long, with large carriage openings at the front of each bay, and is built end on to the slope. In the 20th century, it was converted into a restaurant, during which the doorways were glazed. The single-storey east front features five elliptically headed doorways, separated by narrow brick piers. These piers are adorned with dressed granite blocks that have pintails for hanging the former doors, and small blocks in the middle of each pier with fastenings to hold the doors open. The building slopes down to the left, with each doorway at a slightly different level. The doorways are now filled with 20th-century doors and glazing. The rear wall merits closer examination to better understand the former extent of the 16th or 17th-century building and its original purpose.
