Description

The stable block, now functioning as a craft centre, dates from 1669 and 1882, with the later date likely marking its construction. The earlier datestone may have come from a previous building on this site. It is constructed of serpentine ashlar with granite dressings and features a steep hipped dry Delabole slate roof with projecting eaves. The building has a rectangular plan with a central front entrance. It is currently one room but was originally divided into stalls for horses, as indicated by the paved floors. The style is reminiscent of the late 17th to early 18th century, with Baroque influences visible in the cupola.

The stable block is two storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window front, showcasing original 12-pane horned sash windows. The granite header, stretcher jambstones, and wedged lintels highlight the window openings. A wide central doorway features panelled doors and an overlight. The building has paired eaves brackets. Atop the roof is a square clock turret with a moulded cornice and a clock face on the front, which is adorned with a hexagonal cupola. The entablature projects over six Tuscan columns, and above is an ogee-shaped lead-sheathed roof topped with a weather vane. Inside, the original floor structure remains intact, featuring heavy cross beams and the original king post roof structure. This stable block replaces a similar building from the late 17th century, which is depicted in an 18th-century engraving by Borlase.
