Description

The walls to the Ladies Garden at Trelowarren are ornamental garden walls and steps, dating from around the mid-19th century. They were likely built for Richard Rawlinson Vyvyan. The walls are made of rusticated granite ashlar and feature a coved cornice topped with an embattled parapet, which has moulded copings on the merlons and embrasures.

These walls enclose the north and west sides of a square garden located in front of the north wing of Trelowarren House. The west wall has five windows and returns at right angles at the south end, where steps lead down with windows behind. The north wall features a central doorway bay that projects slightly forward and has four windows, with two on each side of the doorway, creating a symmetrical appearance on both walls.

The doorway in the north wall has a shallow two-centred arch head with toggled voussoirs that connect to the ashlar courses, along with a square impost string. The doorway at the bottom of the steps is similar but lacks the string. The windows are three-light mullioned windows with trefoil-headed lights, where the central light is taller and set within shallow two-centred arched openings. The windows flanking the doorway have leaded glazing. Richard Rawlinson Vyvyan undertook numerous improvements to Trelowarren between approximately 1830 and 1870.
