Description
SW 72 SW MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE TRELOWARREN
4/170 Walls to Ladies Garden
GV II
Ornamental garden walls and steps, fronting and screening garden buildings. Circa mid-C19. Probably built for Richard Rawlinson Vyvyan. Rusticated granite ashlar walls with coved cornice surmounted by embattled parapet with moulded copings to merlons and embrasures. Walls on north and west sides of a square garden in front of the north wing of Trelowarren House, the 5 bay west wall returning at right angles at the south end towards the west with steps with windows behind in the angle; the north wall has central doorway bay broken forward. The west wall has 5 windows; the north wall 4 windows, 2 on each side of the doorway, both walls symmetrical. The doorway of the north wall has a shallow 2- centred arch head with toggled voussoirs linked to the ashlar courses and a square impost string. The doorway at the bottom of the steps is similar but has no string. The windows are 3-light mullioned windows with trefoil-headed lights, the central light taller and within shallow 2-centred arched openings. Those on either side of the doorway have leaded glazing. Richard Rawlinson Vyvyan carried out many improvements to Trelowarren, circa 1830 - circa 1870.
