Description
The garden walls south west of Trefusis House date back to the 18th century and are constructed from Flemish bond brick, stone rubble, and some granite dressings. The walls enclose a roughly rectangular area that is longer on the north-south axis and slopes down to the south, overlooking the Carrick Roads estuary.
The principal west wall features two doorways, with brick facing on the inner side. The southernmost doorway is flanked by granite gate-piers that are square in plan, with moulded plinths, rusticated ashlar bands, and moulded cornices topped with flat caps. A wrought iron gate is set between two inner wrought iron piers, which have shallow ramped handrails on either side. The gate is constructed with vertical square bars that are closely spaced at the base to serve as a rabbit barrier, and the top rails feature scrolled decoration.
