Description
There are two adjoining barns located to the west of Trefusis Farmhouse, dating from around the late 18th century to early 19th century. The barns feature shale rubble walls that include many dressed granite fragments from the 17th century or earlier, along with slate sills and flat brick arches. They have hipped roofs made of dry Delabole slate. The barns are arranged in a U-shaped plan, with the principal barn running east-west and built into the bank at the rear, while the other barn extends south from the west end.
The main barn is two storeys tall and has a nearly symmetrical south front with a 2:1:2 bay arrangement. The central bay is wider and slightly projects forward, featuring an original wide ground floor door that is now half-blocked, along with a narrower loading doorway above. There are small window openings to the right of the doorways, with the first-floor window being blocked, which are likely later additions. The flanking two-window bays each have a doorway leading towards the central bay.
The wing of the barn originally had a symmetrical arrangement of central window openings, flanked by ground and first-floor doorways, with additional window openings at the far left and right. However, this symmetry has been altered by the insertion of a large doorway on the ground floor to the left, a window added to the first-floor doorway second from the left, and a small window opening added to the ground floor on the right. The four first-floor windows are early 19th-century 16-pane, 2-light casements. The interiors have not been inspected. The adjoining building to the west of the main barn, along with further buildings of a similar period, are becoming ruinous. These barns are significant as they serve the home farm of the Trefusis Estate.
