Description
The Carnon Mine Engine House is a ruin of a beam engine house dating from around 1800. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with timber lintels and has a U-shaped plan. The surviving walls are remnants of a rectangular structure, including part of a thicker bob wall to the southwest, the southeast wall, and part of the northeast wall. Originally, the building had three storeys over a basement, but the remaining walls now stand two floors high. There is a plinth in two stages that reaches the top of the basement level. The southeast wall features a doorway on the right, positioned over the plinth, along with a small opening to the left that is slightly higher, and another small opening above the left-hand jamb of the doorway. The interior shows recesses that indicate where floor structures were originally located. This engine house is a rare example of early industrial architecture and is situated in an important scenic location overlooking Restronguet Creek.
