Description

Tregoose Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse, extended in the 20th century to the east. It is constructed of painted stone rubble and cob walls, with a rendered front, and has a half-hipped wheat reed thatched roof with brick chimneys built over the original side walls.

The original design was a double-depth plan, with a principal room on either side of a central through passage, and a shallow service room at the rear on both sides. A large hearth was in the left-hand service room, and a stair turret or fuel store projects from the rear of that room. A single-room extension was added to the right (east) end in the 20th century.

The south front has a nearly symmetrical three-window arrangement, with 20th-century iron casements and a single 20th-century window. A slightly off-centre doorway leads to a 4-panel door with a top glazed panel. A hipped roof dormer is part of the 20th-century addition on the right. The rear (north) and west walls retain a good texture of stone and cob.

Inside, there are some original moulded ceiling beams and some 2-panel doors leading to the first floor. A later staircase has been installed. Large internal chimney breasts remain. The west front room originally had two hearths, and the fireplace in the rear room features a large oven. The original pine roof structure is visible, with lapped and pegged collars.

Tregoose is documented in the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1327 and appears on Martin’s map of 1748. In 1851, the farmer exhibited corn at the Great Exhibition.
