Description

Bridge Cottage is a house dating from around 1760, with an extension added soon after. It is constructed from rendered and painted slatestone rubble and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof and features brick chimneys over the original gable end and the hip of the extension to the north. The layout consists of two rooms flanking a central stair, with a slightly later one-room extension on the right (north).

The building is two storeys high and originally had a nearly symmetrical three-window east front, with a doorway and a window above that are slightly off-centre to the left. The addition to the right, dating from the mid to late 18th century, includes a window on both the ground and first floors. A 20th-century glazed porch has been added at the original entrance, and there is another doorway slightly to the right of the porch featuring a 20th-century 16-pane, 2-light casement window.

Most of the original 18th-century casement windows remain, featuring much of the original glass. These windows typically have two lights and eight panes per light, except for a wider three-light window to the left of the doorway and a two-light casement above the doorway with 15 panes per light. Additionally, there is an 18th-century 16-pane, 2-light casement on the ground floor of the north wall. Many original L hinges with pintails are present, and the mullions and glazing bars have internal mouldings.

Inside, the middle room retains three original bowtell moulded beams and original hearths with cranked oak lintels, which may have been reused from ship timbers. The first-floor rooms and roof structure have not been inspected.
