Description

Halwyn is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It features slatestone rubble walls, which were originally stuccoed on the front (south) and the west side, while the front has been cement rendered with imitation rusticated quoins added in 1985. The roof is hipped and covered with Delabole slate, featuring wide eaves supported by modillion brackets on the front. The chimneys, which originally were made of brick, have been replaced with concrete versions in 1985.

The building has an overall L-shaped plan, consisting of the original front with two equal reception rooms on either side of a central vestibule passage that leads to a central stair hall. This stair hall is flanked by narrow rear service rooms, and there is an early 19th-century wing that extends at right angles to the rear of the left-hand room. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-window south front.

Access to the central doorway is via a flight of five granite steps. The door, fanlight, and doorcase are 20th-century replacements designed to mimic the original six-panel door with fielded panels. The doorcase features pilaster jambs and a round arch with a breaking pediment, topped with a modillioned cornice and panelled reveals. The windows are also 20th-century replacements, designed as 16-pane horned sashes. The interior has not been fully inspected, but the entrance passage includes a plaster ceiling cornice, and the stair hall features an open-well open-string staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail that is wreathed over the newel post.
