Description
Cathacombe Lodge is a mid-19th century lodge for Port Eliot, with later 19th-century additions and a few alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with greenstone quoins and painted limestone dressing, topped with a slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. The building has a two-room plan, with a later two-room addition on the right, heated by an axial stack, while the original lodge has a rear lateral stack.
In Gothic style, the lodge is two storeys high and symmetrical in design. The front features a gabled porch with a four-centred arched chamfered doorway, a hood mould, and a plain door. To the left, there is a single light with a hood mould, and to the right, a two-light casement with a chamfered mullion and hood mould. On the first floor, to the right, there is a gable over a similar two-light casement, with a straight joint leading to the two-storey addition that has a 20th-century door on the right.
The left side of the lodge has a canted bay with a cornice at ground floor level, featuring a two-light casement at the front and single lights on the sides, all with chamfered mullions and leaded lights. There is a three-light casement with a hood mould on the first floor. The rear of the lodge has a gabled bay that projects forward at the centre, featuring a gable end stack with polygonal chimney pots and a two-light casement at the first floor to the left. The addition on the left has two three-light casements at ground floor and two two-light casements at first floor, all from the 19th century, with the end bay rendered. The interior has not been inspected.
