Description
Town Lodge, located on the north side of Fore Street in St Germans, was built around 1840 and has seen few later alterations. It serves as the lodge to Port Eliot and is constructed from greenstone ashlar with limestone dressings, including a plinth, quoins, and gateway. The building features a slate roof behind an embattled parapet and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style.
The lodge consists of a pair of symmetrical two-storey structures, each with a one-room plan, linked by a limestone gateway. The ground floor of each lodge has a three-light window with cusped lights and a square hood mould, along with a band course. The first floor features an embattled oriel window with four cusped lights and a cornice. The central gateway is arched with a four-centred design, adorned with quartrefoils in the recessed spandrels, and has a parapet with blind quartrefoil panels. It also displays a panel featuring the arms, supporters, and coronet of the Earls of St Germans.
On the outer sides of the lodges, there are stacks, while the inner side to the right includes a canted bay on the ground floor with four cusped lights and a panelled parapet. To the right of this bay is a four-panelled Gothic door with a hood mould. The first floor has a string course and two two-light windows with cusped lights and hood moulds, topped by an embattled parapet. The inner side to the left mirrors the right side, with a small single-storey addition to the right that features two two-light casements with two-centred arched heads and a door with an overlight, along with a cornice that includes a gargoyle. There is also a small single-storey addition at the end with a two-light casement featuring a stone mullion and hood mould, and an embattled parapet. The outer side of the building is blind. The interior has not been inspected.
