Description

Nut Tree Cottage and Hawthorns are a pair of attached houses dating from around the mid-19th century, with an earlier wing at the rear of Nut Tree Cottage, likely from the 17th century. The buildings are constructed of slatestone rubble and have an asbestos slate roof, which has a gable end on the left and is hipped on the right, featuring end stacks with brick shafts.

Nut Tree Cottage, located on the left, has a two-room plan with one room at the front and one at the rear. The rear wing, which is of earlier construction, was not accessible during the survey in August 1986. Hawthorns, on the right, also has a two-room plan and features a central entrance that is reached by a flight of granite steps.

The exterior of both houses is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical five-window range. The first floor has two-light casement windows, while the ground floor features three-light casement windows, all with wedge-shaped stone heads. The second bay from the right has a 20th-century half-glazed door leading to Hawthorns, which also has a stone wedge-shaped head. The granite steps leading to the entrance are flanked by 20th-century iron railings and a cast iron footscraper set into the wall.

On the left side, there is a single-storey and attic rear wing with a one-room plan, an end stack, and additional extensions at the back. This section includes a raking dormer with a two-light casement window and a door. The interior of the buildings was not accessible for inspection.
