Description
The building is a forge located approximately 10 meters west of Sandoes, dating from the late 19th century. It is constructed of painted slatestone rubble and some cob, topped with a pyramidal dry Delabole slate roof that features a louvered ventilator at the apex and brick chimneys on the east and west side walls. The forge has a square plan and includes an inner walled pen in the northwest corner.
It is a single-storey structure with a south-facing road front that was originally symmetrical. The entrance includes a doorway to the left of center with a stable-type door, and a widened doorway to the right of center that has a pair of ledged doors. There is also a further doorway, which now has a window, on the side wall towards the rear that was originally used for access to the horse pen. An original window is located at the rear of the horse pen.
Inside, the forge retains its original features, including stone jambs and a corbelled brick hood on the west side, as well as an inserted forge in the southeast corner with one brick jamb and a corbelled brick hood. The horse pen has original wooden shutters on the window in the inner wall and a communicating doorway. This forge building remains largely unaltered since its construction.
