Description

The Old Forge is a forge, likely dating from the later 18th century and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed, grooved sandstone blocks with a stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and a single storey, with four bays. It features four square six-pane fixed windows with stone sills and heads. The roof is hipped. The left-hand end wall originally had an elliptical arched wagon doorway, now covered by external sliding doors. A lean-to extension, with a brick chimney at its junction with the main structure, is located at the right-hand end. The rear of the building contains a doorway, three square six-pane fixed windows, and an added external brick hoop furnace with a chimney. Original features inside include a forge hearth and a quenching trough at the east end. At the time of the survey in 1986, the building was still in use as a workshop.
