Description
Forge Cottage and Rafters is a pair of cottages, likely built in the late 18th century, that have been altered over time. They are constructed of handmade brown brick with some sandstone, topped by a stone slate roof. The cottages have a rectangular plan, each consisting of two units with a continuous rear outshut.
Both cottages are two storeys tall and almost symmetrical. Forge Cottage, on the left, has brickwork joints that indicate the position of a former doorway, while Rafters, on the right, features a similarly blocked doorway with a stone lintel. Each cottage has two square windows on each floor, with stone sills; the ground floor windows have stone lintels. Forge Cottage has a 4-pane sash window and a 2-light horizontal sliding sash window at ground level, but the other windows have altered glazing with glazing bars.
There are chimneys located at the left gable and on the ridge at the junction of the two cottages. The left gable wall of Forge Cottage has an inserted doorway with a small glazed porch and a 4-pane sash window towards the rear. This wall also features stone quoins at the rear corner, with the rear wall made of coursed squared sandstone. Attached to the right end of Rafters is an altered former wagon house made of stone, and there is a modern addition at the rear, neither of which is included in the listing.
