Description

St Levan County Primary School is a former National school built in 1849, as indicated by the datestone on the pump base in front. The building features coursed granite rubble with rusticated granite dressing and has asbestos slate roofs with projecting eaves and bracketed gable ends. The layout includes a central schoolroom with an entrance hall to the right, flanked by two cross wings for classrooms and open-fronted shelter sheds in front of the entrance lobbies at either end.

The exterior is a single-storey, unaltered structure with a 2:1:2:1:1 arrangement on the northeast front. The principal doorway is located to the right of the middle bays. The two-bay front of the schoolroom is flanked by taller cross wings that project forward, and there are two open-fronted loggias in front of the lobbies, which are set back and have doorways near the corners. The building features old ledged doors and possibly original moulded transomed two-light windows. The interior has not been inspected.

In front of the school, there is a high retaining wall topped with possibly original cross-braced iron railings. Aligned with the principal doorway is a dished, vertically-set stone for a former pump, which is also dated 1849.
