Description
Mount Whistle Cottage is a farmhouse that dates from the 18th century, or possibly earlier, and was remodeled in the 18th century. It has been extended in the 20th century. The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings and features wheat reed thatched roofs, with the original roof sweeping lower at the rear. Dressed granite chimneys are located over the gable ends.
The original house, which is now a single room, was initially designed with two main rooms: a kitchen living room on the left and a parlour on the right, with a lobby entrance and stair between. There were likely shallow pantries behind the front rooms, and the house is built into the bank on the left. The 20th-century extension is on the right-hand side and at lower angles in front.
The exterior of the cottage is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical two-window front, with the doorway slightly to the right of the middle. The door and windows are from the 20th century but fit into 18th-century openings. At the rear, there is an old four-pane window with bullseye panes.
Inside, 18th-century features include a large granite fireplace at the left-hand end, bowtell moulded ceiling beams, some plank and muntin partitions, and a pegged roof structure. The original 18th-century plastered under-layer of thatch is still attached to the original battens.
