Description
No. 32 Chapel Street is a former national school, built in 1842, currently used as a builder's store. The building is constructed from local grey limestone rubble, with some slatestone, and features slate-hung walls on the first floor of the right end and rear elevation. The front has brick dressings, and there is a rear centre stack with a stone and brick shaft. The roof is made of natural slate and is half-hipped at the ends.
The building has a deep rectangular plan with one doorway on the front at the left and another on the right return. It is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-bay front that has regular fenestration. The ground floor features a chamfered two-centred arched granite doorway on the right, which has a panelled original timber door with Y-panelling. There are two original ground-floor three-light high-transomed casement windows with timber ovolo-moulded glazing bars and diamond leaded panes, each topped with flat brick arches and moulded brick hoodmoulds. The first floor has three similar windows with plain plate glass glazing.
The left return has a central recessed doorway and three large, blind, round-headed arches on the first floor, which may suggest a previous industrial use. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting original features, including the roof. Historically, the building served as a school from 1842 to 1875, after which it was used for Sunday school, church meetings, and temporary day school accommodation. It is included for its group value.
