Description

No. 115 is a house dating from around 1800, though it may have an earlier core, as the owner has deeds that date back to the 18th century. The building is colourwashed, stuccoed, and has a natural slate roof with gabled ends. It features stacks with rendered shafts and one old terra-cotta chimney pot adorned with ornamental glazed bands. A cast-iron gutter is stamped with lions' heads. The house has a single-depth main block that is two rooms wide, with service rooms at the rear under an M-plan roof. It is set back behind the town mill leat, which runs along the northwest side of Plymouth Road, with a small bridge crossing the ditch.

The exterior of the house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front. The original central front door is recessed and has six panels, with the upper panels fielded and topped by a decorative overlight featuring geometrical glazing bars. The doorcase is reeded. On the ground floor, there are two original 12-pane sash windows with old glass, including coloured glass in the margin panes. The first floor has two original 16-pane sash windows, also with old glass. A verandah spans the front, supported by 20th-century chamfered timber posts with curving brackets and covered by a corrugated-iron tent roof.

Inside, the house retains its original joinery, including shutters, doors, doorcases, and chimneypieces, along with a stick balustrade on the landing. The front of the house is enclosed by railings featuring square-section verticals and spear finials. There is an attractive cast- and wrought-iron garden gate with square-section verticals and spear finials, embellished with curved wrought scrolls and twisted ornament below the middle rail. The stone and iron bridge over the leat is paved with two large slate slabs and is flanked by plain railings.
