Description
The Okeltor Mine buildings date from the mid to late 19th century and are located on the upper bank of the River Tamar, opposite Gawton in Devon. The mine complex, which produced lead, copper, tin, and arsenic, consists of several structures including an engine house with a chimney approximately 30 metres to the northwest, a count house, and a smithy.
The engine house is rectangular and built of slatestone rubble with brick dressings, featuring arched openings with brick detailing. A bob wall stands to the south. A section of the cylinder plinth, constructed of two wide granite stones, remains in the centre. The engine house originally housed a 50-inch cylinder draught engine, operating 75 fathoms of 12-inch plunger lifts and 15 fathoms of 12-inch drawing lifts, installed in 1864. The circular, tapered chimney is constructed of rubble with a brick top and cornice.
The count house is a single-story structure with a hipped slate roof, featuring a window to the front and a door on the side. Adjacent is the single-story smithy, with a corrugated iron roof and an open front.
Further buildings on the site include a dry, boilerhouse, crusher, a whim engine house, a Brunton calciner, stamps, buddles, the remains of arsenic labyrinths, and an arsenic chimney. This was a significant mine near Calstock, boasting a quay capable of accommodating vessels up to 200 tons. The main engine shaft extended to 80 fathoms below the level of the Tamar, with the main copper load passing under the river into Gawton mine in Devon. The mine ceased operations in 1887.
