Description

Quay Cottage and Assayer's Laboratory is a house with an attached assayer's laboratory and storage sheds, located in Morwellham. It dates from the mid-19th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features slate roofs. The house has brick gable end stacks and a rear external rubble stack that heats the room at the back left.

The house has a single depth plan, with the entry directly into a room on the left, which has a straight stair leading to the rear. It is designed with a two-room plan and is two storeys high. The first floor has three 2-light casement windows, each with 8 panes. The ground floor features horizontal sliding sash windows with 4-pane toplights on either side of a gabled trellis porch. This porch has a half-glazed door with a 4-pane light to the left, and there is a second door with a similar sash window at the end right leading to the laboratory.

To the right, the wall splayed back leads to a storage shed that shares the same roof height. This shed has two double doors and one single door, with a pitched roof made of corrugated iron supported by wooden piers over the front area. The rear of the shed has been reconstructed as a miners' cottage at the upper level, built into the slope of the ground. The back of the house features a door with a cambered granite lintel, a single-storey lean-to on the left, and a wooden porch on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
