Description

The south portal to the Tavistock Canal tunnel, dated 1803, is located in Morwellham. The Tavistock Canal was constructed between 1803 and 1817 by John Taylor and spans 4½ miles, connecting the River Tavy to the River Tamar. For nearly 2 miles, the canal runs through a tunnel beneath Morwell Down. From the south portal, it links to Morwellham via an incline plane with a drop of 237 feet. The structure is made of coursed granite rubble and features a round-headed archway with voussoirs and a keystone, along with a datestone positioned above and flanking walls.
