Description
Rumbleigh Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the 16th century, with subsequent additions and alterations in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rendered rubble walls, with asbestos slate roofs gabled at the left end and rear wings, and hipped at the right end. The farmhouse features a rendered brick stack at the left gable end, an axial stack to the right of the centre, and projecting rendered rubble gable stacks to the two rear wings. Originally, it was planned as a 3-room-and-through-passage building, with the lower room likely situated on the right. A two-storey porch is located at the front of the passage, thought to have been added in the 17th century, and includes a small integral room to the right and external access to a room to its left. The farmhouse was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries with two rear wings behind the lower room and hall, respectively. A 19th-century rear outshuts were also added. The front facade, asymmetrical and featuring four windows, has circa early 20th century casements with glazing bars on the first floor—a two-light window to the right and a three-light window to the left. A circa late 19th century four-pane sash window is present on the first floor of the porch. Circa mid-19th century tripartite sash windows without glazing bars are on the ground floor to the left of the porch, and an early to mid-19th century 20-pane sash window is on the ground floor to the right. The porch features a circa 16th century round-headed doorway constructed from volcanic stone with hollow and roll moulding and double ball stops, likely relocated from the front of the passage. Carved quatrefoils are in the recessed spandrels, and the inner porch door is a 20th-century plank and glazed door. A slate seat is on the left-hand side of the porch, and a small room is located to the right. Immediately to the left of the porch is a depressed 4-centred arched, chamfered granite doorway, with part of its right-hand jamb concealed by the porch. A wing is located at the rear to the left, and at the centre, the latter has a small, chamfered granite framed window on the gable end on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
