Description
Pencowl is a villa built around the 1830s for developer Josephus Ferris. It features a stucco exterior on a rubble base and has an asbestos slate roof with a hipped return on the left and projecting eaves at the front. The building has brick end stacks and a square double-depth plan that includes two reception rooms on either side of an entrance hall at the front, along with service wings at the rear. It is two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-window front. The central doorway is elliptically arched and has a porch supported by fluted Doric columns, topped with a moulded entablature. The façade includes terminal quoin strips, keyblocks, and original 16-pane hornless sash windows. The left-hand return wall has later horned sash windows on the left, blind windows on the right, and widely spaced eaves brackets. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
