Description

No. 1, Venton Gannel is a house likely built in the mid to late 18th century. It features painted rubble with cob above, slate sills, and wooden lintels. The roof is thatched with wheat reed, sweeping lower over a rear outshut, and has brick chimneys over gable end stacks, with the right-hand stack being external.

The house has a plan that includes two rooms at the front, which are now combined into one, a kitchen with a larger fireplace on the left, and a parlour on the right with an oven projection. There is a central stair located in a shallow rear outshut that occupies two-thirds of the length, with small service rooms on either side, although the right-hand service room is only partly behind the right-hand room. The left end has been extended with a single-storey service room.

The building is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical two-window front with a nearly central doorway that features a 20th-century glazed door and a hood above it. The ground floor has 20th-century two-light casements, while the upper floor retains old 12-pane two-light casements. Inside, there are some old slightly chamfered ceiling cross beams in the left part, axial beams in the right part, large fireplaces, and an original dog-leg stair with reused balusters from elsewhere. The first floor and roof have not been inspected. This house is one of two 18th-century thatched houses situated in picturesque wooded surroundings.
