Description
No. 2, Venton Gannel is a house dating from the late 18th century, with a 20th-century extension. The building features a rubble base and painted cob above the ground floor sill levels, with slate sills and wooden lintels. It has a wheat reed thatched roof with a gable end, and the chimney on the left gable end may have been removed in the 20th century. A thatched roof also covers a single-storey extension on the left side. The original layout consisted of two rooms, with a slightly larger kitchen that had a large fireplace on the right; there was likely a staircase in a small projection, but the rear has been rebuilt as an outshut. The partitions between the rooms and the central cross passage were removed in the 20th century. The house has been extended with a single-storey addition on the left side. It is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical front with two windows, featuring possibly original 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes. The doorway is centrally located, with a 20th-century door and a thatched hood supported by brackets above it. The interior includes a large granite fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel, although the oven has been removed. This house is one of two 18th-century thatched houses situated in a picturesque wooded setting.
