Description
Carleen Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century. It is constructed of painted rubble with slate sills and wooden lintels, featuring scantle slate roofs. The main roof has 19th-century heightened eaves, while there is a conical roof over a semi-circular rear stair turret and a single-storey lean-to at the rear left. Brick chimneys are located over the gable ends.
Originally, the farmhouse had two rooms: a slightly larger hall or kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right, with a cross passage leading to a winder stair in the semi-circular rear projection. It has since been converted into one room. The building was extended by lean-to service rooms behind the hall, likely in the 19th century, and further extended by a lean-to at the right-hand end in the 20th century.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an irregular three-window front facing northeast, with the first-floor windows grouped towards the right. The entrance is slightly to the right of the middle, and within a 20th-century porch is the original triangular-arched oak doorway, which features two grown jambs cranked at the top to form a pointed straight-sided arch. The 19th-century door is ledged, with the outer planks V-jointed at the joints and midway between. The windows are mainly late 19th-century horizontal sliding sashes, except for the right first-floor window, which is a two-light casement. The rear stair turret includes a small mid-floor window opening.
In an outbuilding to the southeast, there is a window with three round-headed slits carved from a single piece of wood, possibly the original stair window. The interior contains a resited 18th-century two-panel door, a large fireplace in the left-hand room, and a newel/winder stair with wooden treads. The first floor and roof have not been inspected. The newel stair turret is a notable survival in this part of Cornwall, and the arched doorway may be unique.
