Description

No. 51 West End Road is a house dating from the late 17th century, likely extended in the 18th century. It features a timber frame set on a brick or stone plinth, all rendered in pebble-dash. The roof is thatched with gabled and hipped ends, and there are brick axial and gable end stacks. The building has a three-room plan with winder stairs located between the left (south) room and a smaller central room. The right-hand (north) room and a short wing at the back may be an 18th-century addition.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and has an asymmetrical three-window east front. It features 20th-century two and three-light casements with leaded panes. The thatched eaves rise as an eyebrow over a central attic window. There is a doorway to the left of centre, which has a 20th-century timber frame and brick porch. The rear (west) side has a hipped roof wing on the left, with eyebrows over attic windows on the west and north sides, and a 20th-century outshut on the south side, all with 20th-century casements.

Inside, the building has exposed wall and partition framing with straight tension braces. The north room contains a thin chamfered cross-beam and exposed joists, while the centre and south rooms lack main beams but have exposed later joists. The south room features a Victorian iron chimneypiece, the centre room has a 19th-century wooden pilastered chimneypiece, and the north room has a fireplace with a wooden lintel. There is a circa 18th-century two-panel cupboard door under the stairs, and the roof has tie-beam trusses with collars and clasped purlins.
