Description

This is a village house, originally built in the 16th century and subsequently altered. It now comprises two separate dwellings, Nos. 7 and 9, on St Stephen's Hill in Launceston.

The left-hand side (No. 7) is rendered over a rubble base, with the rest of the exterior painted rubble. It has a steeper rag slate roof to No. 9, rubble stacks, and a central axial stack that has been rendered and raised with a brick shaft, along with two rendered rubble rear stacks. The original plan included three rooms and a through-passage, with a hall stack backing onto the passage and evidence of a staircase located behind the stack.

The building is two storeys high, with an irregular four-window front. A 17th-century two-centred-arched doorway, with chamfered dressed stone, is located to the left of the centre, containing a planked and studded door. A later doorway is set to its left, with a four-panel door. An early 19th-century window with 24 panes in three lights is on the left side. The remaining windows are later casements with horizontal glazing bars - a single light is on the left, a three-light window is above the doorways, and a wide pair of four-lights is above a shallow, slate-roofed outshut with a pair of three-light casements on the right.

The interior likely contains seven roof bays, with a boxed-in truss visible in the right-hand chamber. A wide slate-flagged passage features a slate screen on the left side, with an 18th-century two-panel door leading into the hall. The large hall fireplace is partially blocked, displaying a mid-19th century wooden surround and a later inner surround. A mid-19th century staircase with stick balusters is also present. There is a pantry behind the hall and a back kitchen behind No. 7. The original floor structure is partly hidden, and the original roof structure was not inspected.
