Description
No. 5 Newport Square is a village house that has a later shop added to a former attached cottage. It dates from the early 19th century, or possibly the 17th century, and was refronted in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with dressed blocks of granite and features a rag slate roof with brick axial stacks and a central rear lateral stack. It has a single-depth plan with rear wings and stands two storeys tall.
The front has a three-window range, with a symmetrical two-window house on the left and a single window above a double shop front on the right. The early 19th-century windows are hornless sashes with glazing bars, and the ground floor has wide sashes. The house has a central six-panel door with later glazed top panels. The late 19th-century shop front includes stone stall risers, end pilasters, and a moulded entablature with a fascia, along with a 20th-century glazed door and overlight, and plate-glass windows. The interior has not been inspected.
