Description

This is a village house dating from the 17th century, or possibly earlier, located on St Stephen's Hill in Launceston. The house is constructed from painted slatestone rubble with oak lintels, featuring steep rag slate roofs with one 17th-century crested clay ridge tile. It has rubble lateral stacks to the front right and rear left. The original layout comprised a single-depth main block plus a 17th- or 18th-century rear wing set at a right angle to the right, with a later outshut added on the left. The house has two storeys and a three-window front. The left-hand window is a large 18th-century design with 24 panes divided by thick glazing bars. Other windows are early 19th-century or later 2-light casements with thinner glazing bars. The central doorway has a mid-19th-century panelled door with small panes above. Inside, the house has five bays with oak cross beams and joists. A corbelled stone lateral fireplace is present within the right-hand room, thought to be the original hall, while the left-hand room contains a corner fireplace with round granite jambs and a bread oven.
