Description

The gate piers, gates, and entrance screen at Lower Lodge date from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some 20th-century elements. They are made of granite, with cast and wrought iron features. A long stretch of railings sits on a dwarf wall, forming a screen at the entrance to Mount Edgcumbe Park. There is a pier at each end of the railings, with gates on the right and a terminal pier also on the right, which includes a small foot gate at the end.

The dwarf wall supports spearhead railings, and to the left stands a large rusticated granite pier with a square plan, set on a moulded plinth, topped with a cornice, cap, necking, and a ball finial. A buttress with a large moulded granite volute is also present. A similar pier is located to the right of the carriage gates, while the pier to the left of the gates is a 20th-century copy in brown granite without a buttress. The double iron carriage gates are accompanied by a small foot gate that leads to Lower Lodge. Most of the ironwork is from the 20th century. This entrance serves as the access point to Mount Edgcumbe Park from Plymouth via the Cremyll ferry, and the piers are styled similarly to the Triumphal Arch at Higher Lodge.
