7/215 Gate Piers, Gates and Entrance screen at Lower Lodge 23.1.68 GV II

Gate piers, gates and railings. Late C17/early C18 and C20. Granite; cast and wrought iron. Long stretch of railings on a dwarf wall forming a screen at the entrance to Mount Edgcumbe Park. Pier at each end of railings, gates to right and terminal pier to right: of gates with small foot gate to end right. The dwarf wall carries spear head railings; to left a large rusticated granite pier of square plan on moulded plinth with cornice, cap and necking surmounted by ball finial. To the left a buttress with large moulded granite volute. Similar pier to right of carriage gates, pier to left of gates a C20 copy in brown granite without buttress. Double iron carriage gates; small foot gate adjoins Lower Lodge (q.v.). All the ironwork appears to be of C20. The entrance to Mount Edgcumbe Park from Plymouth via the Cremyll ferry. Piers in similar style to the Triumphal Arch at Higher Lodge (q.v.).
