Description
The gate piers and gates at Edwinsford Mansion, located at Irongate Lodge, date from the early 19th century. They feature a wide central gateway flanked by matching narrow gates and outer sections of half-railings on dwarf walls, each side supported by piers. The piers are made of deeply channelled rusticated sandstone. The central pair of piers once had stone pineapple finials, which have been replaced by modern concrete lions. The outer piers retain original stone ball finials on pedestals, although the finial on the extreme left is missing. The outer dwarf walls have chamfered coping. The wrought iron gates, which are of a later date, have a simple design with vertical uprights and a low cross-rail, featuring spear-head finials that are smaller and simpler on the cross and bottom rails. There are also simple small scrolls at the intersections beneath the top rail, and the outer railings are of a similar design with ball-and-spear finials in between.
