Description
The Orangery in the Italian Garden is a Grade II* listed structure dating from the late 18th century. It features a rendered exterior and a slate roof, with a rectangular plan and slightly advanced ends. The building is designed in a classical style, showcasing a seven-bay front where the outer bays are slightly advanced. Each bay is defined by plain Doric pilasters that are paired at the outer bays. The windows consist of 30-pane sashes, and there is a triglyph and mutule frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The hipped roof is set behind a parapet and includes lead rolls at the hips and ridge. The end elevations are adorned with four pilasters and a 72-pane window door. The rear wall features two full-height alcoves with architrave surrounds and three oeils-de-boeuf. According to "The Beauties of England and Wales (Devonshire)" published in 1803, the building was designed by the late Lord Camelford.
