The Old Timber Store And Adjoining Office

The Old Timber Store and Adjoining Office is a timber store, now converted to residential accommodation, and an adjoining former sail loft and stores, now used as an office and accommodation. It dates from the early to mid-late 19th century. The building is constructed from killas rubble with granite dressings and has reinforced bitumen over scantle slate roofs. The office features a hipped roof, while the timber store has a gable end facing south.

The layout is L-shaped, with the office block being a large rectangular two-storey building that likely originally contained one large room on each floor. There is a doorway in the middle of the right-hand end and granite steps at the rear right leading to a former loading doorway. The timber store, which is deep and originally single-storey, adjoins the office at right angles on the left side, with its right-hand side open at the front and supported by very tall granite monolith posts. The interior of the timber store is now mostly filled with two-storey residential accommodation.

The exterior of the two-storey office block originally featured a regular four-window front, with four large window openings on the first floor and four smaller openings on the ground floor, although the left side is now obscured by the later 19th-century timber store. Three openings are visible on each floor, fitted with 20th-century horned sashes with glazing bars, except for the ground floor opening to the right of the middle, which has been enlarged to serve as a doorway. At the rear, there are four original ground floor openings, while the windows above are in 20th-century openings. The east front of the timber store has 19 open bays, originally more, but some have been widened in the 20th century. These bays are divided by very tall quarried granite monolith posts that support the front wall plate.

The interiors have been subdivided in the 20th century. The timber store retains its original king-post roof structure, while the roof structure of the office building has not been inspected but is presumed to be original. The timber store is likely one of the largest, if not the largest, open-fronted 19th-century buildings in Cornwall.
