Description

10/148 The old timber store and adjoining - office
GV II
Timber store (now converted to residential accommodation) and adjoining former probably sail loft and stores (now office and accommodation). Circa early and mid- late C19. Killas rubble with granite dressings. Reinforced bitumen over scantle slate roofs. Taller office roof has hipped roof, timber store has gable end to south. Plan: Large L-shaped plan. Office block is a large rectangular 2-storey building originally probably with 1 large room on each floor. Doorway to middle of right-hand end and granite steps at rear right to former loading doorway. Adjoining at right angles in front of the left-hand side is a very deep originally single storey timber store with its right-hand side open at the front and carried on very tall granite monolith posts. The inner space is now mostly filled ;iith 2-storey residential accommodation. Exterior: 2-store. South front of office block was originally a regular 4 window front with 4 large window openings to first floor and 4 small window openings (left of first floor openings) to ground floor. Later C19 timber store obscures left-hand side but there are 3 visible openings to each floor fitted with C20 horned sashes with glazing bars, except ground floor opening right of middle which is now enlarged to become a doorway. At rear there are 4 original ground floor openings. The windows above are in C20 openings. East front of timber store has 19 open bays (originally more but some bays widened in the C20) with very tall quarried granite monolith posts dividing the bays and carrying the front wall plate. Interior: The interiors have been subdivided in the C20. Timber store has original king-post roof structure; other building presumably has original roof structure (not inspected). The timber store must be one of the largest (if not the largest) open fronted C19 buildings in Cornwall.
