Description

The National Lighthouse Centre in Penzance is a Trinity House depot built in 1861. The building is finished in stucco and features a slate roof with coped parapeted gable ends and shaped kneelers.

The structure is a large rectangular single-storey workshop with six bays, while the southeast section has two storeys with a loft and an entrance at the northwest end. The northeast front consists of eight bays with an arcade of recessed segmental-headed panels. The left two bays have small 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, while the six bays to the right contain segmentally headed 16-pane recessed windows, each with segmentally headed blind panels above. The northwest gable end features a large central doorway and tall narrow 12-pane windows, all with segmental arches set in segmentally arched recesses. Above the doorway, there are blind segmental arch panels, with the center panel being larger and displaying a small plaque bearing the Trinity House arms, along with an oculus above. The rear, or southwest elevation, mirrors the front but in reverse, and includes a loft gable on the right with a loading door.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that the six-bay workshop is open to the roof. This building is a largely complete example of a Trinity House depot and is part of a group of maritime buildings located at Penzance harbour.
