Description
The West Penwith Rural District Council Offices, built in the mid-19th century, are constructed from granite ashlar. The ground floor features rebated joints, with two plain pilasters and two broken string courses above. The building has an eaves parapet and cornice, along with a slightly pedimented blocking course. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has three windows with moulded architraves, fitted with sashes that include glazing bars. There is a side entrance with a single-storey porch supported by granite Doric columns and an entablature. Iron railings surround the basement well at the front of the building.
To the northwest, there is a wing facing the rear, also made of granite, with a slate hipped roof. This wing is two storeys high and features five windows with semi-circular headed sashes that have intersecting glazing bars. At the center of the wing, there is a tall bell tower with four stages, topped by an open rendered bell cote and a short pyramid spire. The left side of the ground floor has been altered to include a modern vehicle passage. The building is dated 1834.
All listed buildings on the northeast side of Chapel Street form a group.
