Description

The Vicarage, said to have been built in 1701, is a substantial granite ashlar building with a slate hipped roof, located on Chapel Street in Penzance. The road-facing facade is three storeys high with five windows, featuring sash windows with revealed casings and without glazing bars. A light granite eaves cornice runs along the top. A side entrance porch is open in design, supported by two fluted Ionic columns, adorned with a key motif frieze. The doorcase features fielded panel reveals, a traceried rectangular upper section, a fanlight, and a fielded panel door. A two-storey projection is solid and located above the porch.

The interior of The Vicarage is noted for its good quality detailing. A staircase incorporates turned balusters, Tuscan columns as newels, and a moulded rail, along with a panelled dado. Moulded ceilings, panelled doors with doorcases, semi-circular and elliptical arches, and a panelled room are also present.

The Vicarage forms a group with Nos. 19 to 28 (consec).
